Volunteering with Brent Scouts

Scouting is constantly growing across Brent and this is made possible by adult volunteers. With award-winning training and one-to-one support, we make sure that everyone gets to make the best use of their skills and talents.

Part of Scouting's modern appeal to adults is our approach to flexible volunteering, it's great when people can make a regular commitment to helping to provide weekly scouting to young people but we know it's not always possible. People nowadays have busy, often unpredictable lives – meaning that they can't commit set hours, on set days.

Whether you are in the thick of activities with a group of young people or working behind the scenes in a management, trustee or support role. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts while respecting how much time you can offer.

Over 90% of our volunteers say that their skills and experiences have been useful in their work or personal life.

Charity Roles

Chair

Scouting relies on strong leadership. So if you can motivate others, keep a cool head and balance a variety of views then you would be an ideal chairperson for Brent Scouts. With the experience of steering meetings to produce excellent decisions, you’ll be equally willing to speak your mind as encouraging others to express their views.

You will use your strong communication skills help to help a team of committed adult volunteers who make up an Executive Committee arrive at a good decision that will benefit young people. Able to work as part of a team, you will also contribute to the direction and development of the scout group or district.

No previous experience of Scouting is necessary. What’s more important is your own skills and experience as well as empathy with our mission and values. We will provide all appropriate training and ongoing support.

Secretary

Are you a natural organiser? Do you know what’s happening, not just next week, but next month and year too? Is your electronic diary always perfectly in sync? If this sounds like you, then we’d love you to consider supporting us as Group Secretary. A great communicator, team player and problem solver, you’ll be as good a listener as you are at taking accurate minutes and reminding us of our rules.

We’re only able to help young people step up, play their part and gain great skills when our groups are well managed and run. A Group Secretary is absolutely essential to this, which is why, as one of our trustees, you will be responsible, supportive and have our best interest at heart at all times. In return, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping us prepare so many more young people for the future.

Treasurer

Do you have a good head for numbers without losing sight of the big picture? If so, we could use your talents to help transform the lives of young people in your area.

Brent Scouts now need a strong team player with excellent judgement, analytical and organisational skills to join our Executive Committee. We’ll provide excellent training and support.

You will help manage and monitor the financial activities of the Group, acting as Treasurer. You will prepare and present financial reports and accounts and while supporting budgets and financial planning process in accordance with legal regulations.

With excellent IT skills and the ability to summarise and communicate complex financial information, you will also be willing and eligible to act as a Charity Trustee.

Committee Member

This committee oversees the administration of the Group. As well as a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, each Executive welcomes people with specific skills, and representatives of Beaver, Cub and Scout parents. Most Group Executives meet three or four times a year, but effective members will volunteer for tasks in between the meetings, thus ensuring the smooth running of the Scout Group and maximising its potential for a hugely positive impact on its young members.
